Weekly Roundup: Friday, 13 October, 2017
Here are some links I thought were worth sharing this week:
DATA SCIENCE
Tech giants acquired 34 AI startups in Q1 2017
"Tech giants seeking to reinforce their leads in artificial intelligence or make up for lost ground have been the most aggressive buyers. Google has acquired 11 AI startups since 2012, the most of any firm, followed by Apple, Facebook and Intel, respectively, according to CB Insights."
Google's new browser experiment lets you learn about basic AI
"Just how does machine learning work? You’ve probably read a primer or two on the subject, but often the best way to understand a thing is to try it out for yourself. With that in mind, check out this little in-browser experiment from Google named Teachable Machine. It’s a perfect two-minute summary of what a lot of modern AI can — and more importantly can’t — do."
VIRTUAL REALITY
Facebook’s new virtual reality strategy: self-reliance
"With standalone headsets, Facebook can take its massive war chest and the billions of dollars it’s already pledged and put on its blinders, undercutting competitors’ prices and plugging ahead even if headset numbers fail to immediately impress."
DATA PRIVACY
The $1.2B privacy-based ad market you probably haven’t heard of
"outside of the mainstream media, a quiet revolution has been happening. The under-13/kids media sector, while transitioning from TV to digital, has become the biggest privacy-based ad market in the world."
